چکیده

Algorithms for retrieval of the temperatures of snow surfaces have been examined for melting snow in mountainous areas in southern Norway. The tested algorithms include dualband techniques as well as dual-view techniques. The study also included existing calibration data for the algorithms. The study has showed satisfactory results for two dual-band techniques, the Key and Coll algorithms. They were yielding results close to the reference data for ATSR and AVHRR data. The dual view algorithms applied on the ATSR data estimated a slightly colder surface than the reference. Improvements in the dual-view algorithms may be obtained by better calibration data and more precise co-registration between nadir and forward looking images.

Preliminary Assessment of the Impact of Lakes on Passive Microwave Snow Retrieval Algorithms in the Arctic

The retrieval of snow water equivalent (SWE) and snow depth (SD) information from passive microwave brightness temperatures is theoretically straightforward: as the depth and/or density of snow increases, so too does the amount of volume scatter of naturally emitted microwave energy. Shorter wavelength energy (i.e. 37 GHz) is more readily scattered than longer wavelength energy (i.e. 19 GHz), s...

Investigation of snow cover changes affected by climate change In North West of Iran

In this study in order to monitor snow cover, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) optical images were used, while for detection of snow covered areas, the  snow index-NDSI, was applied. The results showed - according to the climatic conditions of the region- during the following months: December, January, February and March, most of the area is covered by snow and the max...

Controls on Northern Hemisphere snow albedo feedback quantified using satellite Earth observations

Variations in the strength of the current spring snow albedo feedback (SAF) over Northern Hemisphere land surfaces (NH) explain over one third of the 21 century temperature response to anthropogenic forcings in this region within global circulation model (GCM) projections. Observation based estimates of controls on SAF are needed to constrain the snow and albedo parameterizations in these model...

Evaluation of ShARP Passive Rainfall Retrievals over Snow-Covered Land Surfaces and Coastal Zones

Using satellite measurements in microwave bands to retrieve precipitation over land requires proper discrimination of the weak rainfall signals from strong and highly variable background Earth surface emissions. Traditionally, land retrieval methods rely on a weak signal of rainfall scattering on high-frequency channels and make use of empirical thresholding and regression-based techniques. Bec...

Evaluation of the performance of MERIS spectrometer data in snow cover monitoring in the boreal forest belt

This paper describes a work plan for the evaluation of the capabilities and performance of Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) data for monitoring snow covered land surfaces, specifically in the boreal forest belt. The performance of MERIS over snow in the northern latitudes is mainly estimated by comparison of time series derived from MERIS surface reflectance against values derived...
